Batch Filtration

The Plate and Frame Filter Press is commonly used in batch chemical processing. The filter unit consists of a series of alternating plates and frames sandwiched together with filter cloth covering both sides of the plates. The filtrate flows through the cloth, leaving the solids on the surface of the filter cloth. The frames provide space to collect the cake.

In this experiment, a slurry of 1 to 10 micron particle size calcium carbonate and water is filtered using a 7" X 7" Shriver Filter Press. This system is a constant pressure filtration process. Combinations of plates and various width frames are assembled to optimize the operation for several concentrations of the slurry.
